Caring for Swimwear: 5 Tips for Doing It Right

External influences such as sunscreen, salt water, and chlorine can quickly cause bikinis and swimsuits to lose their shape, elastic bands to become brittle, and unattractive yellow stains to appear. Especially after a summer holiday, you realise how important proper care is for extending the life of your swimwear.

#1 Rinse your bikini well

After every wear, you should rinse your bikini with fresh water to remove salt, sand, sunscreen, and chlorine. Simply rinse it under running water and gently squeeze out any excess water. This keeps the fabric clean and reduces fading.

#2 Wash by hand

When you need to wash your bikini, we recommend doing so after every three wears. Use the bluu washing strips and wash by hand by soaking the bikini in lukewarm water with mild detergent, then gently squeezing it out. Avoid rubbing or twisting the bikini or swim shorts, as this can damage or distort the fabric.

#3 Lay flat to dry

Never let your bikini dry in the sun. UV rays can damage the fabric and increase fading. Instead, dry it in the shade on a flat surface. Avoid wringing out the bikini or swim shorts, as this puts unnecessary strain on the fabric and can warp it.

Tip: Press out excess water with a towel by laying the towel over the bikini and carefully rolling it up.

#4 Treat stains gently

Avoid applying sunscreen or oils directly onto your bikini, as they can cause stains. If you want to remove stains such as wax, sunscreen, deodorant marks, or other residue, you can use bluu’s stain soap. Wet the affected area, rub in the stain soap, and let it sit briefly before rinsing it out with water. Note that you should first test the stain soap on an inconspicuous area to make sure you do not damage the fabric.

#5 No tedious decanting

For on the go and when travelling, our washing strips are ideal. They fit perfectly into any luggage and can be taken anywhere without the hassle of decanting. ;-) You can also easily dissolve the washing strips in a bowl of water and wash your laundry by hand. Anytime, anywhere.

For the sake of the environment

Washing your bikini correctly can not only help it last longer, but also reduce its environmental impact. According to a study, an average bikini is washed 15 times per year. To minimise environmental impact, we recommend reducing the number of washes to 5 per year. Assuming a bikini is worn for 5 years, this would mean a total of 25 washes. By taking this measure, you could reduce the environmental impact during the use phase by up to 66.7%.

In addition, you should use green electricity to further reduce environmental impact. By combining these two measures, you can reduce water pollution by 28.2% and global warming potential by 14.8%. Switching to green electricity can also bring additional savings of 9.4%.

Overall, by taking proper care of our bikinis, as well as choosing high-quality, long-lasting products, we can help reduce environmental impact and make our clothing last longer. This means we can keep wearing our favourite bikinis again and again while also helping to protect the environment.
